“earth&us At Ujjain Simhasth – Re-Connecting Religion with Environment”

At Simhasth 2016, Ujjain, India – The Biggest Gathering in the History of Mankind

5 Crore (50 Million) people from all over India and World are expected to visit during one month from April 22-May 21.
The common thread across all 50 million visitors is Religion and Spirituality.

Majority of the people attending Simhasth are not Environmentally conscious or literate. They believe that Nature is GOD but somehow fail to treat it as such in their routine lives – only because they do not realize the extent to which their seemingly harmless carelessness is hurting our world and its resources. Hurting Nature that Nurtures every single one of us.

And having grown up in this city and studied here, we decided to use this opportunity. We figured that one way in which a big and direct change could be brought about is simply to raise awareness on connection between Religion and Nature.  In other words – making people realize simple things such as:

o   A “Religious” activity is not over when one thinks it is over. For e.g. you carry flowers in a plastic bag, offer the same to the Deity and throw the bag away. And you think you are done with the good part. But then, a cow ends up eating those plastic bags and dies as a result of it. This is, in a way, Gau-Hatya. Think about it for a second. If you were aware and this entire sequence somehow played out in front of you like a quick movie– making you realize the entire cycle – would you ever use a plastic bag again?
o   Plastic bag doesn’t decompose in 1000 Years.
o   Carrying flowers, milk, prasad and other offerings in Plastic Bags is just not done.
o   There is nothing Religious about throwing Flowers, Pooja material, animal dead bodies etc. in our Rivers, or bathing and washing clothes using soap etc. It hurts the eco system (water life, vegetation etc.) in many ways and irreversibly.
o   India’s 91 key reservoirs have only 23% water left in them (as of April 2016)
o   Consuming less water in your daily routine and religious activities is so easy and collectively can even resolve the water crisis.
o   Overall, minor changes or just being aware in their routine activities (religious or otherwise) can help Environment in big ways. Etc. Etc. Etc.

Imagine – When a Few Thousand Religious people avoid plastic bags for carrying flowers, milk, prasad etc. to offer to GOD every single day, when a few thousand people reduce their consumption of water, easily, by 1-5 liters daily, when a few thousand people stop throwing “stuff” into our rivers, when a few thousand people stop using soap while bathing or washing clothes in rivers, when a few thousand cows don’t have to eat plastic every day.  And imagine when people observing these few thousand folks, try to do the same and more. And simply put – all such people eventually become better human beings and more responsible towards Nature, Environment and in Life generally.

At Simhasth, we will be displaying banners, slogans, audio visuals, facts and figures, simple do’s and dont’s etc. at major camps and strategic spots. We will be requesting the Saints to convey our message through their Pravachans to hundreds of people every day. We will be running a Signature and Pledge Campaign asking people to acknowledge the same, promise relevant behavior changes on their part and influence people around them.

Audience is perfect in terms of numbers and profile, Occasion is Pertinent and Impact could be Huge. We are just trying to do a small bit for Nature that gives us everything that we ever need – to Eat, Breathe and Live.

Do’s and Dont’s

Do not carry Prasad, Milk, Flowers or any other offerings to GOD in plastic bags. A Plastic Bag may take 1000 years to decompose.
Throwing plastic bags chokes sewages and gutters which results into floods during rains. This can be observed in Mumbai every year.
Don’t bathe or wash clothes in our Holy Rivers using soap. Soap harms water life and vegetation.

It gives birth to many diseases.
Do not dispose dead bodies in Rivers. It is harmful for aquatic life and leads to a huge casualty of life.

Try to reduce and recycle all water and milk used in religious ceremonies. Provide water, milk and other offerings to animals and needy.
During shaving, washing clothes and utensils, brushing and other household activities always keep the tap closed.
